In a recent interview with the Telegraph, the former England captain said that winning gold at the Games would be the ‘ultimate achievement’.

‘The fact that we’ve got the Olympics in the East End of London where I grew up, the fact that I could be part of that and that I could be out there trying to win gold would mean a hell of a lot to me because I am very patriotic,’ he added.

Fifteen of the 18 players in the GB squad must be born on or after January 1st 1989, which is causing an issue for Premier League managers reluctant to have their young stars tied up next summer.

Both Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson have expressed concerns that their training will be disrupted, however, Harry Redknapp said he would support any players who wanted to join the Olympic side.

‘It’s a great event to take part in and an honour to represent your country,’ he told the Mirror.
